Hobo Campfire Dinners

If you've never tried Hobo dinners while camping - you're missing out!!

Thinly slice carrots, onions, and potatoes.  Tear off a 12” strip of tin foil.  Place a hamburger patty on the foil.  Place a layer of vegetables on top.  Add salt, pepper or other spices to your liking.  Fold the foil over the top and bottom.  Fold up the corners so it won’t leak and place on the coals, hamburger side down.  It should take 20-30 minutes depending on the heat of your coals.  When done, open it up and use a knife and fork to eat directly from the foil.

Want that barbeque flavor for your Hobo?  Put a squirt of BBQ sauce on the hamburger before you put on the vegetables.

Give it a try!  Try your own ingredients and share your recipes with us!

John Wilkie - The Jellystone Man

Monday, May 30th at 3:00pm at the Recreation Building.
Please join us to celebrate the life of Mr. John Wilkie.

(Free admittance to the park for John's Memorial.)

A man so familiar
A man so dear
So much a part of
Our family here

Big career behind him
Big money….Big name
Came to live with us here
Lots of work… but no fame

There seems no end
To all of the knowledge he holds
Of the park…of the people
All the places he goes

His loyalty unmeasured
Never demanding his way
All requests quickly answered
“You got it!” he’d say

Not one to be showy,
Just a simple ole guy.
Always has a cold beer for
When friends will stop by

Let’s lift up our glasses
Let’s all give a cheer
For this wonderful friend
We hold so dear

For without him our lives
More difficult would be
No more “3 second” deliveries
No success guarantee

Thank you, Thank you
For your presence here.
For all that you’ve done..
Your heart so sincere

Please know that we love you
Through our smiles and our tears
And that our memories of you
Will carry on through the years

So many come and go here.
It’s just part of the plan.
But there could be no replacing
The Jellystone Man

Dangers of Moth Balls

Since many campers tend to use mothballs during winterization of their camping units, we thought we would share this important information with you.

Moth balls contain naphthalene and are considered a pesticide. They also contain paradichlorobenzene.  The gases produced from these compounds grow and ferment over time and can be dangerous to humans and animals.  Inhaling the vapors can cause bad headaches, dizziness and respiratory distress.  Side effects can include: Irritated eyes, headache, dizziness, respiratory distress, liver damage, confusion, excitement, malaise (vague feeling of discomfort), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, irritation in bladder, profuse sweating, jaundice, hematuria (blood in the urine), renal shutdown, dermatitis, optical neuritis, corneal damage.

The most common alternatives you can use instead of mothballs would be cedar or lavender.  Here are a few more you could also try:
  • Dried penny royal
  • Dried mint leaves
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cloves
  • Bay leaves
  • Peppercorns
  • Lavender
  • Ginsent
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary
  • Wormwood
  • Vetiver
  • Thyme
  • Rose petals
Here are a few sites where you can find more information regarding mothballs.
